A stump left behind after a tree removal is an eyesore, a mower hazard, and a magnet for carpenter ants and termites. Snyder's Outdoor Solutions grinds stumps across Hagerstown and the surrounding area down below grade — not the couple-inches-down "ground flush" job a lot of crews will try to sell you. When we're done you can plant grass, lay sod, drop a paver patio, or simply forget the tree was ever there.

What Stump Grinding Includes

Every stump grinding visit includes more than just the grind itself. We assess the site, call in utility locates when needed, and clean up so you can use the spot the same day.

  • Utility locates before we start (we call 811)
  • Grinding 6-12 inches below grade, deeper on request
  • Major surface roots ground out where accessible
  • Chips raked back into the hole or hauled off — your choice
  • Debris cleanup and final site blow-off

Why Grind a Stump Out

You want to replant in the same spot

Grass, shrubs, and new trees don't thrive on top of a decaying stump and its root mass. Grinding below grade gives new plantings a real shot.

The stump is a safety or mowing hazard

Stumps and major surface roots wreck mower blades, trip kids, and turn ankles. Grinding is usually cheaper than a new mower deck.

You're planning hardscape over the area

A patio, walkway, or shed pad over a stump is asking for settlement cracks a few years down the road as the wood rots below.

You've got termites or carpenter ants showing up

A decaying stump close to your house is a feeding ground. Removing it cuts off the infestation path before it reaches your siding.

Why Depth Matters

There's a reason the cheapest stump grind in town isn't always a good deal: if it's only ground flush to the surface, the wood and root mass is still there, still rotting, still attracting pests, and still going to settle when a patio or sod goes in over it. We grind deep enough to let you actually use the space, and we chase the major surface roots where they cause lawn problems. It takes a little longer. It costs a little more. It saves you calling somebody back in two years.

"Stump grinding is one of those jobs where you can't tell good work from bad work until somebody tries to plant grass over it, and by then the guy with the cheap quote is long gone. We grind deep enough that you can put something real there — not just hide it under an inch of topsoil."

Our Stump Grinding Process

  1. 1

    Site visit and quote

We measure, check access, and give you a flat-rate price — no surprise add-ons after we start.

  2. 2

    Utility locates

We call 811 before any grinding starts. Most stumps are shallow, but we don't take chances with gas or electric.

  3. 3

    Grind below grade

6-12 inches is standard. If you're replanting or building over the spot, tell us and we'll go deeper.

  4. 4

    Root chasing

Major surface roots that create mowing or landscape problems get ground out where they're reachable.

  5. 5

    Cleanup

Chips raked back into the hole as fill, or hauled off if you prefer bare dirt. Site blown off before we leave.

We provide stump grinding across our primary service area, including Hagerstown, MD, Greencastle, PA, Waynesboro, PA, Frederick, MD, and Martinsburg, WV. Most jobs happen within a 30-mile radius of our Hagerstown base.

Need a related service? We also handle tree removal, and lot and land clearing — often in the same visit.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does stump grinding cost?
Most residential stumps run in the low-to-mid hundreds. Price depends on diameter, depth requested, how many stumps, and access — tight backyard with a gate is more work than curbside. We give flat-rate quotes after a quick site look, often remotely from photos if you send them.
Can I plant grass or a new tree where a stump was ground?
Yes, especially if we've ground deep enough and hauled the chips off (chips left in the hole pull nitrogen out of the soil as they break down, so if you're seeding grass right away, topsoil fill is the move). A new tree in the exact same spot is trickier — most arborists recommend planting a few feet off-center to miss the old root mass.
How deep do you grind?
6-12 inches below grade as a default. If you're replanting, laying sod, or putting hardscape over the spot, tell us and we'll go 18+ inches. For a simple 'make it look gone' grind with no landscape plans, 6 inches below grade is usually enough.
Do you haul the chips, or leave them?
Your call. Chips raked back into the hole are free — they'll settle and break down over a season or two. Haul-off is an add-on but worth it if you're seeding grass or replanting right away. Some homeowners want the chips as mulch for garden beds; just say the word and we'll leave a pile where you want it.
Do you do multiple stumps in one visit?
Yes, and multi-stump jobs get a per-stump discount because the grinder's already on site. If you cleared a lot or took down several trees last season, bundle them into one visit.
